Institute for International and Area Studies (IIAS) of Tsinghua University is an independent research institute of the university established on Sept 20, 2017. Taking full advantage of the multidisciplinary nature of the university, IIAS seeks to enhance the international academic influence of the university. With both global perspective and a firm basis in China’s national conditions, the Institute aspires to become a comprehensive multidisciplinary research institute for area studies.

Guided by the principles of academic freedom, interdisciplinary development, Chinese characteristics, and global perspective, IIAS conducts studies of countries across the globe, with a particular emphasis on the history and culture, domestic and foreign affairs, and social development of developing countries. The Institute seeks to support the establishment of comprehensive ties between China and the rest of the world, and to promote world peace, conflict resolution, and sustainable development.

IIAS is also committed to training academic researchers and scholars specializing in area studies. In pursuit of its mission to produce leading academic research and become an internationally renowned area studies institution, the Institute seeks to assemble a world-class area studies team of scholars with Chinese perspectives and a commitment to foundational academic research.

IIAS seeks to advance foundational area studies on six regions: Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, South Asia, Eurasia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and West Asia and North Africa. IIAS encourages researchers to conduct foundational and significant country-specific or region-specific research from the perspective of political science, economics, sociology, public administration, history, or law, or from an interdisciplinary angle. In the future, IIAS will expand its research scope to the humanities, engineering, architecture, and arts.
