Prof. Gong obtained a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in geography from Nanjing University in 1984 and 1986 respectively, and received a doctorate degree from the Faculty of Environment, University of Waterloo in Canada in 1990. He was awarded tenure by the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, University of California, Berkeley in 1997, and was promoted to professor in 2001. His research interests include global environmental change and public health, technology, and society. He has published more than 500 academic papers (with over 320 SCI papers and over 12,000 citations in SCI papers) and seven monographs in Chinese and English. In 1994, he won the Talbert Abrams Award of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS); in 1998, he was awarded as one of the first batch of Distinguished Oversea Young Scholars by the National Natural Science Foundation of China; in 2004, he joined the first overseas consultant group of the Ministry of Science and Technology with other eight experts; in 2008, he won the Outstanding Contributions Award in Remote Sensing from the Association of American Geographers (AAG); in 2013, he was awarded the honorary title “Teacher of Excellence in Beijing”; in 2014, he won the second prize of Excellent Papers of the SCIENTIA SINICA Terrae and Author with Outstanding Contribution Award of the Chinese Science Bulletin; and in 2015, he won the Award of Highly Cited Papers of the Chinese Science Bulletin. Professor Gong served as Founding Director of the International Institute for Earth System Science, Nanjing University in 2000, and Founding Director of the State Key Laboratory of Remote Sensing Science in 2004. He was appointed as Director of the Center for Earth System Science, Tsinghua University in 2010, and has served as Dean of the School of Science, Tsinghua University since May 2017.
