Li Qiang

Li Qiang: Male, Han ethnicity, born in May 1950 in Beijing.

Current post: Professor of the Department of Sociology, Tsinghua University and one of the first senior professors of liberal arts at Tsinghua University.

Concurrent post: Director of the Institute of Minsheng Economic Research, Tsinghua University

Professor Li served as Dean at the former School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University from 2003 until January 2017.

Education & Work Experience:

In 1968, Professor Li graduated from Beijing No. 4 High School.

From 1968 to 1977, he worked in the Heilongjiang Production and Construction Corps.

In 1978, he enrolled in the School of International Studies, Renmin University of China and received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in law in 1982 and 1985, respectively.

From 1990 to 1991, he was awarded the Sino-British Friendship Scholarship and studied sociology at the University of Bristol in the UK.

In 1992, he studied social research methods at the University of Michigan in the US earning a certificate.

From 1985 to August 1999, he served as a teaching assistant and then a lecturer at the Research Institute of Sociology and the Department of Sociology, Renmin University of China.

In 1989, he was promoted to associate professor and postgraduate supervisor for his exceptional performance.

In 1993, he was promoted to professor for his exceptional performance.

In 1995, he became a doctoral supervisor.

Professor Li has delivered lectures and speeches at Harvard University, Yale University, the University of Chicago, Stanford University, Cornell University, Duke University, Columbia University, Dickinson College, the University at Buffalo, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of California, Los Angeles in the US and Kwansei Gakuin University in Japan. He has also given academic speeches at City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Baptist University, the University of Wales and the University of Bristol in the UK, and Ritsumeikan University, Waseda University, the University of Tsukuba, Aoyama Gakuin University, Kwansei Gakuin University, and Chuo University in Japan.

The courses he taught in Renmin University of China include Introduction to Sociology, Social Indicator Systems, Social Issues in the United States, Applied Sociology, Theoretical Study of Sociology, Social Structure Research, Social Stratification and Mobility, Research Methodology of Sociology, and Introduction to Public Relations.

Professor Li has served as Professor and Dean of the Department of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University and Director of the Institute for Contemporary China Studies of the University since September 1999, and has served as Deputy Dean at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tsinghua University since May 2000. He served as Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences from 2003 to 2012 and as Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University from July 2012 to January 2017.

He currently serves as Director of the Institute of Minsheng Economic Research, Tsinghua University.
