    Biography

      Jia Yan is a tenured associate professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Tsinghua University. He obtained a bachelor's degree in Hindi from Peking University in 2011 (during which he was sent to study at the University of Delhi from 2008 to 2009), a master's degree in Indian Languages and Literature from Peking University in 2015, and a Ph.D. in Literature, Culture, and Postcolonial Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, in 2019. From August 2019, he served as an assistant professor in the Department of South Asian Studies at the School of Foreign Languages, Peking University, and in February 2025, he transferred to the Department of Foreign Languages at Tsinghua University as a tenured associate professor.

      His research areas cover Indian languages and literature, Sino-Indian literary relations, Indian religious culture, and country-specific as well as regional studies of South Asia. He has achieved abundant academic accomplishments, having published over thirty papers in both Chinese and English in authoritative domestic and international journals such as Perspectives, The Journal of Asian Studies, Journal of World Literature, Foreign Literature Studies, Chinese Comparative Literature, and Lu Xun Research Monthly. Several of his papers have been summarized in the Xinhua Digest or included in international academic awards. He has published and translated works including Lighting the Lamp: Selected One-Act Plays by Ramgumar Varma, co-translated Sur Poetic Sea (three volumes) and India and China, and serves as the deputy editor of the textbook Standard Hindi. He has led multiple research projects, including youth projects under the National Social Science Fund and research topics under the International Academic Alliance for Cultural Exchange, and has participated in major projects funded by the National Social Science Fund and the National Publishing Fund. He currently serves as Secretary-General of the South Asian Languages Branch of the China Association for South Asian Studies, an executive member of the China Association for South Asian Studies, Editor-in-Chief of South Asia Studies, and Deputy Editor of Tsinghua Foreign Languages. He has received awards such as Outstanding Class Advisor at Peking University and the Teaching Excellence Award of Shuren College, Peking University. Undergraduate theses under his guidance have won the "Outstanding Undergraduate Graduation Design (Thesis) of Beijing Universities" award, and he has repeatedly achieved success in international competitions such as the "Zhang Peiyao Cup" Best English Paper Competition for Young Scholars in Translation Studies.
