Area Studies is a comprehensive academic serial publication sponsored by the Institute for International and Area Studies at Tsinghua University, published by The Commercial Press, and edited by Professor Jiang Jingkui. It is published biannually and fully indexed in CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure). The journal is dedicated to supporting the development of Area Studies as a first-level discipline and aims to provide a high-quality academic platform for scholars engaged in area studies research. It focuses on the objects, themes, theories, and methodologies of the field, adopting a topic-oriented approach to promote knowledge production and innovation.

Since its inaugural issue in October 2022, Area Studies has published a series of research outputs characterised by theoretical originality and in-depth fieldwork. With the increasing integration of disciplinary development and teaching and research practice, methodological approaches that emphasise localisation while combining theoretical depth with policy relevance have gained growing attention. The journal highlights theoretical explorations grounded in area studies practice and oriented towards building an independent Chinese knowledge system. It also places particular emphasis on reflections on epistemology and methodology, especially the distinctive role of fieldwork in area studies.
