On September 7, 2024, the academic symposium on "Industrial Development and Value Chain restructuring in Southeast Asia under the Perspective of Area Studies" was successfully held in the Central Main Building of Tsinghua University. The symposium was hosted by the Institute for International and Area Studies of Tsinghua University (hereinafter referred to as "IIAS"), and more than 10 experts from institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xiamen University, Shanghai International Studies University, and Tsinghua University attended the symposium to discuss topics such as the new characteristics of value chain restructuring under the changing times and new paths for industrial development research in area studies.

At the opening ceremony, Assistant Director and Assistant Professor of IIAS, Zhou Yan delivered a welcome speech. Zhou Yan first welcomed the experts present, and then introduced the history and current situation of the IIAS, and emphasized the important theoretical and policy significance of this symposium. Philip Arnold P. Tuano, former president of the Philippine Economic Association and dean of the School of Government at Ateneo de Manila University, delivered a congratulatory speech. Professor Tuano, on behalf of the School of Government at Ateneo de Manila University, greeted the experts present, congratulated the IIAS, and expressed his academic views on the theme of the symposium in light of the reality of the Philippines.

Zhong Feiteng, Professor at the Institute of Asia-Pacific and Global Strategy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and director of the Great Power Relations Research Office; Liu Hongzhong, Zhiyuan Leading Scholar at Shanghai International Studies University, and professor at the Shanghai Institute of Global Governance and Area Studies; Wu Chongbo, professor and former vice dean of the School of International Relations/Nanyang Research Institute of Xiamen University; Liu Hongsong, Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs of Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Zhang Miao, associate professor and vice dean of the School of International Relations/Nanyang Research Institute of Xiamen University; Chen Chao, associate professor at the School of International and Public Affairs of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and vice dean of the Institute of Political Economy; Zhang Qianyu, assistant Professor at the Institute of Asia-Pacific and Global Strategy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; and Huang Yutao, assistant Professor at the Institute of World Economics and Politics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (in order of speaking) exchanged views on the two topics of "Value Chain Research Path under the Perspective of Area Studies" and "Industrial Development in Southeast Asia under the Perspective of Area Studies".

The afternoon session was hosted by Assistant Professor Huang Yutao and Assistant Professor Zhang Qianyu. The experts shared their academic achievements on topics such as the model of Southeast Asian countries participating in value chain trade, the restructuring of the Asia-Pacific value chain and the role of Southeast Asia under geopolitical changes, global market integration and anti-terrorist financing governance in Southeast Asia, semiconductor industry policies in the Asia-Pacific region, Malaysia's industrial policy and industrial structure adjustment, the development of Vietnam's motorcycle industry, the development of Indonesia's manufacturing industry and its cooperation with China, and China-ASEAN green value chain cooperation. After the academic report, the scholars also conducted further discussions on the content of each other's reports.
