IIAS Signs Memorandum of Understanding with the School of Political Science, International Relations and Public Administration of the National University of Mongolia
    • From April 30 to May 2, a delegation led by Qiu Yong, Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee, visited Mongolia to advance educational and scientific cooperation as well as people-to-people exchange between Tsinghua University and Mongolia, contributing to the continued development of the China–Mongolia comprehensive strategic partnership. Shen Minjuan, Chinese Ambassador to Mongolia, attended selected events, and Yang Bin, Vice Chairperson of the University Council of Tsinghua University, accompanied the delegation.

      During the visit, Qiu Yong and his delegation separately met with senior Mongolian leaders, including Bumbatsogt, Chairman of the State Great Khural, and Deputy Prime Minister Nomtoibayar, and held discussions with Enkh-Amgalan, Mongolia’s Minister of Education and Science, as well as representatives of Mongolian universities. Exchanges focused on deepening educational cooperation, strengthening talent cultivation, promoting scientific and technological innovation, and enhancing cultural and academic exchange.

      Mongolian leaders emphasised that developing relations with China remains a central priority of Mongolia’s foreign policy. They noted that Tsinghua University, as a world-renowned institution, has made important contributions to China’s economic and social development through its outstanding talent cultivation. At a time when Mongolia is accelerating its regional development agenda, they expressed strong support for deeper cooperation with Tsinghua across education, science, and intellectual exchange, with the aim of cultivating more talent, building stronger bridges between the two countries, and contributing positively to the long-term development of Mongolia–China relations.

      Qiu Yong stated that Tsinghua University remains committed to advancing high-level international openness and implementing its global strategy. Standing at the new historical milestone of its 115th anniversary, Tsinghua is prepared to strengthen cooperation with Mongolian partners in talent cultivation, scientific innovation, and knowledge transfer, while leveraging its comprehensive disciplinary strengths to support high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and contribute to building a China–Mongolia community with a shared future. Guided by the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, Tsinghua will further expand practical cooperation with Mongolian universities in areas such as talent development, artificial intelligence, and digital healthcare, while increasing support for Mongolian students studying and conducting exchanges at Tsinghua.

      As a key outcome of the visit, on May 1, under the witness of representatives from both China and Mongolia—including Qiu Yong, Ambassador Shen Minjuan, Minister Enkh-Amgalan, and Ochirkhuyag, President of the National University of Mongolia—Professor Jiang Jingkui, Director of the Institute for International and Area Studies (IIAS) at Tsinghua University, and Professor Munkhbat, Dean of the School of Political Science, International Relations and Public Administration at the National University of Mongolia, formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of their respective institutions.

      According to the memorandum, both sides will further strengthen cooperation in education and joint scientific research, including faculty and student exchanges, collaborative research, academic publishing and dissemination, academic conferences and lectures, and the sharing of academic materials and research resources. The agreement will continue to expand institutionalised ties and scholarly exchange between the two institutions.

      In recent years, IIAS has continuously strengthened exchanges and cooperation with Mongolian universities and academic institutions. The establishment of this new partnership with the School of Political Science, International Relations and Public Administration of the National University of Mongolia will help promote sustained and in-depth academic collaboration on Mongolia studies, Northeast Asian and Eurasian regional studies, China–Mongolia relations, and regional governance.

      Dr Zheng Nan, Assistant Research Fellow at IIAS, accompanied the delegation and participated in the signing ceremony and related exchange activities.

      Founded in 1942, the National University of Mongolia is the country’s oldest comprehensive university and a major institution within Mongolia’s higher education and scientific research system. It has long played an important role in talent cultivation, academic research, and social development, while its School of Political Science, International Relations and Public Administration serves as an important platform for education and scholarship in political science, international relations, and public administration in Mongolia.
