IIAS African Studies Lecture|China's Public Health Experience in Africa
    • On April 19, 2024, from 14:00 to 17:00, the Sub-Saharan African Studies Research Group of the Institute for International and Area Studies (IIAS) of Tsinghua University hosted the first lecture of the 20223-2024 spring semester, with the theme of “China's Public Health Experience in Africa”. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Wang Duoquan, Researcher/Deputy Director of the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases (IPD), Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) and Dr. Yang Kun, Researcher/Deputy Director of Jiangsu Institute of Parasitc Diseases, and was moderated by Dr. Gao Liangmin, Assistant Professor, Institute for International and Area Studies, Tsinghua University. Close to 60 IIAS faculty members and doctoral students, scholars and students at home and abroad, and others interested in the topic attended the lecture.

      The first part of the lecture was on the theme of “China's malaria prevention and control practice and innovation in Africa”, Dr. Wang Duoquan systematically introduced the global and Chinese malaria situation, the basis of China-Africa cooperation in malaria prevention and control, the basic practice and main experience of malaria prevention and control in China and Tanzania.

      The second part of the lecture was on the theme of “China-Africa Schistosomiasis Prevention and Control Cooperation Path and Prospect”, Dr. Yang Kun systematically analyzed the current situation of global schistosomiasis, China's prevention and control of schistosomiasis, Africa's demand for schistosomiasis, the aid program for Zanzibar's prevention and control of schistosomiasis as well as the path to participate in the global governance.

      During the Q&A session at the end of the lecture, the researchers engaged in a lively discussion with the teachers and students of IIAS and the online and offline participants on the model and strategy of multilateral cooperation in global health governance, the experience of the Chinese team in localization, the differences in the practice of public health in different African regions, the mechanism of grass-roots drug distribution, as well as the status of China's current cooperation with international organizations and other countries, and its future development.

      Dr. Wang Duoquan, Researcher/Deputy Director of the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases (IPD), Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), adjunct professor at School of Global Health, Chinese Center for Tropical Diseases Research, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, has been awarded the Huaxia Prize for Medical Science and Technology and the Yunnan Provincial Prize for Health Science and Technology. Since 2015, he has organized and implemented the China-Britain-Tanzania Malaria Control Pilot Project, China-Tanzania Malaria Prevention and Control Cooperation Demonstration Project, and China-Africa Malaria Prevention and Control Cooperation Phase I Project.

      Dr. Yang Kun, Researcher, Doctoral Supervisor, Deputy director of Jiangsu Institute of Parasitc Diseases, Key medical talents of Jiangsu Province, the first batch of top health talents in Jiangsu Province, “333” high-level talents, “Six Talent Peaks” high-level talents. He also serves as a member of the Medical Parasites Section of the Chinese Society of Preventive Medicine and Global Health Section, vice president of the Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Journal Society, vice president and secretary general of the Jiangsu Provincial Endemic Diseases Association, and Chairman of the Schistosomiasis Specialized Committee, etc. His main research interests are parasitic disease control, spatial epidemiology, global health, and application of artificial intelligence. He has hosted over more than 10 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province, and the Social Development of Jiangsu Province; edited 6 academic monographs in Chinese and English; and won the second prize of the Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress, the second prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology, and won more than 10 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievements.
