IIAS Southeast Asian Lecture | Adjustment and Future of the Regional Division of Labor System in East Asia under the Background of Geopolitical Changes
    • On the evening of March 7, 2024, Institute for International and Area Studies of Tsinghua University invited Professor Liu Hongzhong from Shanghai Academy of Global Governance & Area Studies, Shanghai International Studies University to give the first online lecture in the series of lectures on "Industrial Development and Value Chain Reconstruction in Southeast Asia under the Great Changes", with the theme of "Adjustment and Future of the Regional Division of Labor in East Asia under the Background of Geopolitical Changes". The lecture was hosted by Assistant Professor Li Yuqing from IIAS, Tsinghua University, and Assistant Professor Zhang Qianyu from the Institute of Asia-Pacific and Global Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as discussant. More than 100 teachers and students from domestic and foreign universities and professionals interested in the topic attended the lecture.

      In the lecture, Professor Liu Hongzhong firstly introduced the historical changes of regional division of labor in East Asia, namely, from the goose model to the East Asian production network, and then analyzed the impact of the transformation of the international order in the new era on the regional division of labor in East Asia from the perspective of geopolitical economy. Finally, he put forward ideas and suggestions on how China should deal with the changes in the regional division of labor in East Asia. Subsequently, Dr. Zhang Qianyu shared her insights on topics such as the construction of the East Asian economic circle and the transformation of China's role, and had a rich discussion with Professor Liu on the new requirements for national capabilities posed by the current reality of the "regionalization" of the world economy. Finally, Professor Liu enthusiastically responded to the questions of the students on the scene and shared professional views on the impact of the reconstruction of the regional production network on the resilience of China's industrial chain.

      Liu Hongzhong is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Shanghai Institute of Global Governance and Regional Countries, Shanghai International Studies University, a Zhiyuan Leading Scholar at Shanghai International Studies University, Vice President of the China World Economics Society, and an Excellent Talent of the New Century of the Ministry of Education. He was the Dean of the School of International Relations of Liaoning University, Director of the Center for Economic and Political Research of Transition Countries of Liaoning University, a key research base for humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, and a visiting professor at the City University of Macau. He has published 7 monographs and more than 90 papers; presided over 15 provincial and ministerial projects, including major projects of the National Social Science Fund and major projects of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education; and won 9 awards for humanities and social science achievements of the Ministry of Education and other provincial and ministerial awards.
