IIAS Southeast Asian Lecture | International Political Economy, Value Chain Trade and the Development of Southeast Asia
    • On the morning of March 28, 2024, the Institute for International and Area Studies of Tsinghua University invited Professor Zhong Feiteng, a researcher at the Institute of Asia-Pacific and Global Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and director of the Research Office of Great Power Relations, to give the fourth online lecture in the series of lectures on "Industrial Development and Value Chain Reconstruction in Southeast Asia under Great Changes", with the theme of "International Political Economy, Value Chain Trade and the Development of Southeast Asia". The lecture was hosted by Wang Lingqi, a doctoral student at IIAS, Tsinghua University, and Dr. Huang Yutao, an assistant researcher at the Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, participated in the discussion. More than 100 teachers and students from domestic and foreign universities and professionals interested in the topic attended the lecture.

      In the lecture, Professor Zhong Feiteng used Southeast Asia, ASEAN and its position in the world economy as a guide to explore the driving forces and challenges of Southeast Asia's development from a political and economic perspective. Then, taking Japan as an example, he introduced and summarized in detail various models of Asian economic development, such as the "geese model", "triangular trade" and "serial value-added", and analyzed the East Asian development model led by the United States, as well as the changes in the United States' influence on the development of the East Asian region with the changes in geopolitical environment and power factors. Finally, Professor Zhong Feiteng analyzed the trade models and economic development trends of Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand, as well as the changes in Southeast Asia's position in the global value chain, and introduced the risks of geopolitical competition and the new concept of "Asian alternative supply chain". Subsequently, Professor Zhong Feiteng and Dr. Huang Yutao and other participating scholars had a heated discussion on the application of international political economics theory, the impact of Sino-US power competition on regional economic growth, and the upgrading and challenges of the ASEAN consumer market.

      Zhong Feiteng is a researcher at the Institute of Asia-Pacific and Global Strategy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, director of the Great Power Relations Research Office, director of the Center for Regional Security Studies, and doctoral supervisor at the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He holds a doctorate in law from Peking University and a doctorate in philosophy from Waseda University. His research interests include international political economics, Sino-US economic and trade relations, and the political economics of the Belt and Road Initiative. He has published 11 books, including Developmental Security: China's Rise and Order Reconstruction and Controlling Investment Liberalization: The Challenge of the United States to Japanese Direct Investment (1985-1993), and more than 30 papers in academic journals such as World Economy and Politics and China Economic Review. In 2017, he was selected into the "List of Important Reprint Sources of Renmin University Reprints of Newspapers and Periodicals" of Renmin University of China, and has served as an editorial board member of World Political Studies of Renmin University of China since 2018. He has won the first prize in the Excellent Policy Information Research Report of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and was selected into the National Talent Program and the chief expert of the National Social Science Fund Major Project.

      Huang Yutao is an assistant researcher at the Institute of World Economics and Politics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and a doctor of international relations from Oxford University. His research areas are international financial governance, international mechanisms and norms. His papers have appeared in journals such as World Economics and Politics and Chinese Political Science Review.
