IIAS Southeast Asian Lecture | Analysis of the Quiet Rise of Indonesia's Manufacturing Industry and Its Cooperation with China
    • On April 15, 2024, Institute for International and Area Studies of Tsinghua University invited Professor Wu Chongbo of the School of International Relations/Nanyang Institute of Xiamen University to give the sixth online lecture in the series of lectures on "Industrial Development and Value Chain Reconstruction in Southeast Asia under Great Changes", with the theme of "The Quiet Rise of Indonesia's Manufacturing Industry and Analysis of Its Cooperation with China". This lecture was hosted by Qin Beichen, a doctoral student at the Institute for International and Area Studies of Tsinghua University, and attended by more than 100 teachers and students from domestic and foreign universities and professionals interested in the topic.

      Professor Wu Chongbo sorted out Indonesia's economic status and development prospects from a macro perspective in chronological order, emphasizing the impact of foreign investment on Indonesia's economic growth, stock market prosperity and technological development. Then, Professor Wu Chongbo focused on the advantages, problems and difficulties of Indonesia's manufacturing development, and finally put forward rich insights and policy suggestions on the experience and inspiration of Indonesia's manufacturing development process for China. After the lecture, Professor Wu Chongbo and the audience had an in-depth discussion on the reasons for Indonesia's deindustrialization, Indonesia's role in the Maritime Silk Road Economic Belt, and cooperation between China and Indonesia.

      Wu Chongbo, former vice president of the School of International Relations/Nanyang Research Institute of Xiamen University, professor and doctoral supervisor. Academic part-time jobs: part-time professor at Sun Yat-sen University and Guangxi University for Nationalities, member of the Expert Committee of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Landi International Think Tank, and member of the Expert Advisory Committee of the Southern Ocean Research Center of the State Oceanic Administration of China. Main social part-time jobs: member of the Standing Committee of the Fujian Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, member of the Standing Committee of the Fujian Provincial Committee of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party, and vice chairman of the Xiamen Municipal Committee. He has published more than 200 papers in academic journals such as "Economic Dynamics", "World Economy", "World Economy and Politics", "International Trade Issues", and "Contemporary Asia-Pacific", and more than 20 academic papers in English in foreign journals. He has published 3 books; presided over or is currently in progress 6 National Social Science Fund projects, 5 major research projects of the Ministry of Education, and 7 Fujian Provincial projects. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Melbourne, Australia for 1 year; and a visiting scholar at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands for 1 year.
