On 28 August, a delegation from Tsinghua University's Institute for International and Area Studies (IIAS) visited the University of Rwanda (UR), where both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the establishment of the IIAS Kigali Field Station, and had in-depth exchanges on future academic cooperation between the two sides. The Kigali Field Station will be established by the IIAS and the UR, which aims to provide a platform for Tsinghua University and its partners to conduct field research and academic activities in sub-Saharan Africa.

Kabasha Samuel, Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Strategic Planning and Administration, and Manager of Strategic Planning Department of the University of Rwanda, and Yang Chongsheng, Assistant Director and Associate Professor of the Institute, delivered welcoming speeches, introducing the development and academic philosophy of both sides, and looking forward to the space for future cooperation. Kabasha Samuel welcomed the visit of the IIAS team and expressed his expectations for a friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation. The two sides signed a MoU on cooperation, committing to share academic resources and exchange academic visits under the principle of equality and win-win situation.

Previously, the IIAS delegation visited the UR several times and reached a high level of consensus with Kayihura Muganga Didas, Vice Chancellor of the UR, on the construction of the IIAS field station in Rwanda. UR welcomes the establishment of a mutually beneficial academic exchange and cooperation relationship between the IIAS and the UR, and has authorized Ndikumana Raymond, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Strategic Planning and Administration, to take full charge of this cooperation on behalf of the UR, and to coordinate the resources of the University to support the establishment of the IIAS Kigali Field Station as well as the implementation of the related follow-up academic activities.
