On April 18, 2024, the Institute for International and Area Studies of Tsinghua University invited Keun Lee, Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for Economic Catch-up at Seoul National University, and former Vice Chairman of the National Economic Advisory Council of the President of South Korea, to give the seventh online lecture in the series of lectures on "Industrial Development and Value Chain Reconstruction in Southeast Asia under Great Changes", with the theme of "Global Value Chain, Industrial Policy and Asian Upgrading". This lecture was hosted by Guan Hao, a doctoral student at the Institute for International and Area Studies of Tsinghua University, and attended by more than 100 teachers and students from domestic and foreign universities and professionals interested in the topic.
In the lecture, Professor Keun Lee reported on his three case studies on global value chains and Asian industrial policies in recent years, with the topics of "Comparative Analysis of Information Technology Industries in Taipei, China, Shenzhen and Penang, Malaysia", "Comparative Analysis of Automobile Industries in China, Malaysia, Thailand and South Korea" and "Comparative Analysis of Resource-Concentrated Industrial Development Policies in China and Chile". In the analysis, Professor Keun Lee introduced the upgrading of regional innovation systems from the perspective of "region-global" interaction, and guided the audience to think about the important role played by "local ownership" and local knowledge in reviewing the successful experiences and failed lessons of industrial policies in different countries. After the lecture, Professor Li Gen and the audience had an in-depth discussion on issues such as the development of the Western knowledge system and the impact of industrial transfer on the China-Japan-ROK Free Trade Agreement.
Keun Lee is a professor of economics and director of the Center for Economic Catch-up at Seoul National University in South Korea. He is a world-renowned expert in economic catch-up research and Asian economies. He was formerly the vice chairman of the National Economic Advisory Council of the President of South Korea, the chairman of the International Schumpeter Society, the chairman of the Asia-Pacific Innovation Network Committee, a member of the United Nations Development Policy Committee and the World Economic Forum. He is currently the editor of the academic journal Research Policy and a member of the management committee of the Global Innovation Network (Globelics) and the Asia-Pacific Innovation Network. His book "Schumpeterian Analysis of Economic Catch-up" won the Schumpeter Prize in 2014.
